Assam girl Lavlina Bargohain, who brought glory to the country and the state by winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, was awarded the prestigious Sports Ratna award on Saturday. A solemn ceremony held at the Darbar Hall of The President’s Building The assam star boxer along with 11 other athletes from Assam received the Sports Ratna award from President Ramnath Kovind. The athletes who received the award along with Lavlina are Olympic gold winning star Javelin Thrower Neeraj Chopra, Veteran women’s cricketer Mithali Raj, Indian men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh, star goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, Olympic silver medallist wrestler Ravi Dahiya, star footballer Sunil Satri, Paralympic gold shooter Avani Lekhara, javelin thrower Sumit Antil, shuttler Pramod Bhagat, Krishna Nagar, shooter Manish Narwal.
It may be recalled that a total of 12 athletes were awarded the Current Year’s Sports Ratna Award this time as India won a record 7 medals at the last Tokyo Olympics and 19 medals at the Paralympics. Javelin Thor War Neeraj Chopra became india’s first athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics. With the Khel Ratna award, the athletes won prizemoney of Rs 25 lakh in cash and a medal. Meanwhile, President Kovind presented the prestigious Arjuna Award to 12 athletes as well as 35 athletes at a function held at The President’s Building. The award is accompanied by the award. A prize of Rs 15 lakh and a bronze statue. The event was attended by several dignitaries including Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, former Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.
