5 elephants including cubs trapped in forest water since night: Forest department’s efforts to rescue
Five wild elephants were trapped since Wednesday night after falling into a deep gorge in bandarmatha reserve forest under Laxmipur regional forest department in Goalpara district. A team of forest workers, who were standing at The Chabari in the forest on Thursday morning under the leadership of regional forest officer Dhruv Dutta, heard the screams of wild elephants and noticed five elephants, including cubs, trapped in the ditch as they entered the forest. Local sans that the five elephants were trapped when they went down to drink water on Wednesday night among a single elephant crossing the border in search of food from the neighbouring state of Meghalaya.
People alleged that some illegal red land traders, dusting the eyes of forest workers, put an excavator deep in the protected forest and dug huge pit in the forest, so the wild elephants that entered the forest in search of food suffered by getting trapped and trapped late at night. Last year three elephants were trapped in forest scabies while another young elephant died tragically after falling into the ditch of a border village.
Forest officials dutta and forest officials were able to rescue the handcuffed hata with the help of an excavator on Thursday afternoon. He said that about 45 wild elephants have been grazing in the forests under the Laxmipur regional forest department for the past one year. He said the breeding process of wild elephants is now going on deep in the forests of Laxmipur. In such a state it has not been possible to chase wild elephants. The newly appointed forest official said forest officials are keeping a close eye on illegal red land trade inside the forest to prevent illegal mining of forest land.
