Gurugram: One more sham call centre busted, 10 arrested
Police have busted yet another sham call centre in Gurgaon, this time in Sector 43. As many as 10 people, including the owner and the manager of the call centre, have been arrested for allegedly duping US citizens by posing as technical officials of IT giants like Microsoft, officials said on Saturday. The fraudsters, police claimed, would send pop-ups of porn sites on various websites to dupe US nationals. If someone clicked on a pop-up, their screen would stop and they would be requested to provide information such as their name and phone number. Once a phone number is submitted, the user would receive calls from the conmen offering technical assistance. The accused, cops said, would charge USD 500 from each.
Acting on a tip off, the cyber police raided the call centre that was operating from two floors of a building in Sector 43. When cops raided the call centre, they found more than a dozen people working on computers and laptops. When enquired about the company’s license, the supervisors had nothing to show. Several laptops and mobile phones have been seized, officials said.
