Today is the day of writer Homen Bargohain

Today is the birthday of eminent lyricist, journalist, writer Homen Bargohain. The festival will be celebrated in different parts of the state in the physical absence of the lyricist. The 90th birthday is being celebrated by the Assam government this time with an exceptional programme.

Journalist, storyteller, poet, essayist, novelist Homen Bargohain was born in 1932 at Dhakwakhana in Lakshimpur district. He is father’s name Indradhar Bargohani and mother’s name is Grandmother Bargohain. He was married to eminent writer Nirupama Bargohain in 1957. Their two children are Anindya Bargohain and Pradeept Bargohain.

His contribution was recognized by the Assam government for his literary contribution with numerous awards including the Assam Valley Sahitya Puraskar besides conferring the Srimanta Shankardev Award on him. Bargohain was awarded the Assamese Language Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978 for the book ‘Father and Son. Though he returned the award and the cash it received in 2015 as a protest against the lack of tolerance created in Indian society. Homan Bargohain had twice decorated the assam sahitya sabha president’s seat in 2001 and 2002.
