Himanta Biswa Sarma had ordered the state police to furnish the chargesheet within 30 days for a speedy trial. Assam police likely to submit its charge sheet in the Animesh Bhuyan lunching case of Jorhat in the first week of January 2022, a week later than the deadline set by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier.
Thanks to the eye witnesses in the case who have allegedly did not cooperate with the police and did not depose their statements before the police. Jorhat police had appealed them to record their statements. The lynching incident had happened on November 29, in broad day light in a busy market area of Jorhat town.
On November 30, state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assuring a stringent action in the case had ordered the state police to furnish the charge sheet within 30 days for a speedy trial. Assam police special director general GP Singh said, “We have collected the electronic evidences and sent them for forensic tests. Statements of witnesses as well as traffic police present on the spot that day were recorded. The process may take some 10-12 days more and we believe, police can file a strong charge sheet in the case in the first week of January. ”Earlier, Jorhat SP Ankur Jain told TIME8, “We have collected the electronic evidence. But the investigation still needs strong eye witness accounts. We know who were present at the spot and trying to motivate them to depose their statements. We hope they will come forward and help police to prepare a strong charge sheet in the case so that the accused can be convicted.”
There were huge reactions and demand of justice in the case and police also swung into action to nab the accused. However, the lack of strong eye witnesses has posed as a major weakness in preparing a strong charge sheet.
