COVID is pro-BJP and anti-Assamese people: Assam Congress

The Assam Congress, on Monday, launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP in the state over the deteriorating COVID situation.

Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah said: “COVID is pro-BJP and anti-Assamese people.”

He further said: “COVID is a friend of the BJP.”

This statement from the Assam Congress chief comes on the day the state logged the highest ever single-day spike in COVID numbers.

Assam, on Monday, logged nearly 7000 new COVID-19 cases, of which over 1400 were detected from in and around Guwahati city.

The Assam Congress president was reacting to a query on the state government’s new directive that bars a non-fully vaccinated person from entering public places.

“It seems that COVID can only infect the common Assamese people but not the BJP leaders, workers nad their supporters,” Bhupen Borah said.

This new directive of the Assam government has sparked a new debate – “Is a Fundamental Right of an individual being violated by the state?”

Notably, Article 15 of the Constitution of India “prohibits discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth, or any of them. This right can be enforced against the State as well as private individuals, with regard to free access to places of public entertainment or places of public resort maintained partly or wholly out of State funds.”

In fact, the Centre has told the Supreme Court that no person can be forced to take jabs of COVID vaccine.
