Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 31 will visit to Mizoram and inaugurate the Assam Rifles facility in Zokhawsanga in the state’s capital of Aizawl.
Shah will also lay the cornerstone for the Laldenga Culture Centre in Aizawl, close to AR Ground.
Earlier Chief Minister Zoramthanga already informed media last month that Shah will visit the state on March 17 for the programme.
Shah’s visit was eventually postponed for March 31.
It should be noted that the Mizo National Front (MNF) has pushed for the relocation of the Assam Rifles’ headquarters from the centre of Aizawl to Zokhawsang ever since seven civilians died in a fight with a paramilitary group in 1988.
The Assam Rifles were ordered by the Union Home Ministry in February 2019 to move their battalion headquarters to Zokhawsang by May 31 of that year. But there was a delay.
One of the MNF’s major campaign pledges during the most recent Assembly elections held in November 2018 was the evacuation of the camp.
