Assam Among States with worst access to tap water performance

Guwahati: Assam came out as one of the worst performers, along with Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha in providing access to tapped drinking water for both rural and urban households, according to a report by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).

According to the NSSO data, the states with the fewest rural families with access to a private toilet are Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha, with less than 90% of the population having access to improved drinking water sources in Kerala, Manipur, Nagaland, and Jharkhand.

It should be mentioned that the Multiple Indicator Survey (MIS) was part of the 78th cycle of the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO). It was initially slated to take place in 2020, but because to the pandemic, it was moved up. 1.6 lakh respondents were from rural households, and the remaining 1.1 lakh were from urban households.

The research said that over 95.7 per cent of respondents reported having access to an “improved supply of drinking water,” despite the penetration of piped drinking water being extremely low in many areas. Water from pre-packaged bottles, water piped into a home, yard, or neighbor’s yard, a public tap, a tube well, a hand pump, a covered well, and a tanker are examples of this.

Almost 60% of families fit this description in every other state, while over 30% of households in the three states lacked access to a toilet.

Almost 70% of rural households reported having exclusive access, while another 21.3% said they had neither exclusive nor non-exclusive access to restrooms. The study also found that about half of rural families still use firewood as their main fuel source for cooking.

Also, 16.18% of males and 43.8% of females between the ages of 15 and 24 were not enrolled in school and were either working or receiving training during the survey’s administration.

Around 50% of those over the age of 18 had full access to mobile phones at the same time. In order to confirm the development of financial inclusivity in India, around 90% of the sample size reported having a single or joint bank account, other financial institutions, or mobile money service providers.

Moreover, less than 25% of homes in Chattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal, Nagaland, and Madhya Pradesh, along with Jharkhand, used LPG. In contrast, more than 70% of households in these states used firewood for cooking.

Also, it was found that the biggest proportion of men between the ages of 15 and 24 who were not receiving education, job, or training at the time of the census were living in Delhi, Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Kerala. On the other hand, the states with the largest percentage of female residents were Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Bihar. According to the report, less than a third of adults in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand have exclusive access to mobile phones.
