Guwahati: The deadline for tying an Aadhaar number to a voter ID has been extended by the central government till March 31, 2024.

The last date to link voter ID with Aadhaar was April 1, 2023.

According to a gazette announcement from the Ministry of Law and Justice, applications for names to be added to the electoral roll cannot be turned down. It added that if a voter is unable to present their Aadhaar number, their name will not be removed from the electoral roll.

Aadhaar connection with voter identification can now be finished for an additional year since the new deadline is March 31, 2024, according to an official announcement.

The Ministry of Law and Justice, in a notification said, “The Central Government hereby makes the following amendment in the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Law and Justice (Legislative Department), number S.O.2893(E), dated 17th June 2022, namely:- In the said notification, for the words and figures, “the 1st April 2023” for the words and figures, “the 31st March , 2024” shall be substituted.”

The Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, which was enacted by the parliament in December 2021, mandated that the Election Commission of India (ECI) direct everyone to link their Voter ID card with their Aadhaar card.

The two identification cards are linked to verify entries on the electoral roll, verify voter identity, and determine whether someone is registered in the same constituency more than once or in numerous constituencies. Also, the ECI started a number of efforts in this area.
