Manipur CM urges protection of water resources On World Water Day

Guwahati: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stated at the World Water Day celebration that “water is life” and “we cannot survive without water.” He also asked the public to recognise the significance of water.

The Public Health Engineering Department at Khuman Lampak today organised a State Level Awareness Campaign for “World Water Day 2023” with the theme Accelerate Change. As part of the campaign, the Chief Minister also signalled the start of a bike rally on water conservation. Sendra in Bishnupur will serve as the rally’s endpoint.

Addressing as the event’s chief guest, the chief minister emphasised that the water cycle depends on forests and trees and that the government has been emphasising Green Mission Manipur ever since the start of the previous term.

He added that the people, especially those who live closest to the forest cover, should defend the forest cover. He called for the preservation and conservation of reserved forest and protected forests area.

The Chief Minister also stated his desire for PHE, Water Resources, and Forest engineers and officials to organise rallies in the hills where there is significant deforestation in order to educate the locals on the value of trees and foster a sense of responsibility for the forest cover.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need for prudent water use by reminding the populace that the government is working to ensure that they have access to enough water. During the most recent era of economic hardship, he claimed, the government delivered water from the Thoubal Project, built a reservoir at the Chingkhei Ching water treatment facility, and established filling stations at Khuman Lampak.

He exhorted the populace to refrain from contaminating river water by washing their clothes in it or letting septic tanks leak into it, stating that civilization is more than just the construction of infrastructure. It also involves individuals having civic sense.

N. Biren Singh went into more detail on how illegal substances affect society. He emphasised the necessity to recognise addicts and for neighbourhood clubs and organisations to provide proper counselling and care to families of addicts without victimising or degrading them in order to promote their recovery.

Speaking about the Har Ghar Jal Project, the Chief Minister stated that while about 75% of the pipe laying has been finished, it is useless without a water source.

He also exhorted people to create modest tree covers in the valley areas and plant more trees. The Chief Minister warned the populace against filling up water bodies, pointing out that ponds and other waterbodies were being filled to build community halls.

The chief minister stated that Lotak Lake is being preserved and protected, along with Lamphelpat and other waterbodies.

The observation was also attended by PHE Minister L Susindro Meitei, Textiles, Commerce and Industries Minister Nemcha Kipgen, Water Resources Minister Awangbou Newmai, Transport Minister Kashim Vashum, MLAs Th Arunkumar Singh, Leishiyo Keishing, Sapam Kunjakeswor Singh, Khongbantabam Ibomcha among others.
