PV Sindhu withdraws from Swiss Open in round of 16

Guwahati: Ace PV Sindhu, an Indian badminton player, tumbled out of the women’s singles competition, ending her chances of competing in the Swiss Open 2023 at the Round of 16. The contest is now being place in Basel of Switzerland.

Furthermore, the men’s singles competitors HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth left the competition after losing.

PV Sindhu easily defeated local wildcard Jenjira Stadelmann to open her title defence. In the opening round of the Swiss Open, a BWF World Tour Super 300 event, Lakshya Sen was defeated in straight games while PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and Commonwealth Games champion, defeated Stadelmann 21-9, 21-16 to end the match in just 32 minutes.

With the victory, fourth-seeded PV Sindhu qualified for her first-ever match against Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani in the second round of an individual event.

However, PV Sindhu stumbled in their Round of 16 match and lost the Swiss Open. She faced an Indonesian opponent, and in a close match, lost 21-15, 12-12, and 21-18.

However, in a bad night for Indians, World No. 9 and fifth seed HS Prannoy fell to unseeded Frenchman Christo Popov 21-8, 21-8. He had defeated China’s Shi Yu Qi, a finalist at the England Open, to advance to the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals.

Matches in the Round of 16 stage also having a bad night were Mithun Manjunath and Kidambi Srikanth, who both lost their men’s singles.

It should be mentioned that Kidambi Srikanth, rated 20th in the world, was thrust into the spotlight by Lakshya Sen’s early retirement from the competition. He lost against Cheuk Yiu Lee of Hong Kong in a closely contested match 22-20, 21-17, unable to live up to the expectations placed on him.
