2 ATCs suspended As Flight India & Nepal Airlines nearly collided in midair

Guwahati: Two air traffic controllers have been suspended by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) on Sunday after a major tragedy was averted when two airlines nearly collided in midair.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday when two aircraft destined for Kathmandu, an Air India flight from New Delhi and a Nepal Airlines plane from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, nearly collided in midair. The pilots’ prompt response averted the disaster thanks to the warning systems, though.

The CAAN spokesperson, Jagannath Niroula, said that the two staffers were placed on administrative leave for “carelessness.”

The CAAN tweeted, “Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) of Tribhuvan International Airport involved in traffic conflict incident (between Air India and Nepal Airlines on 24th March 2023) have been removed from active control position until further notice.”

Meanwhile, a three-member team has been constituted by the authorities to look into the situation.
