Manipur Govt To Establish Temporary Prison Facilities To reduce number of illegal immigrants

Guwahati: The Manipur government is considering setting up temporary detention camps along the Indo-Myanmar border to house refugees fleeing Myanmar and make sure they do not mingle with the locals due to the current situation in the neighbouring country.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh on March 25 announced his intention to establish temporary detention facilities to house and assist refugees in need; after the crisis has passed, they will be sent home.

CM Biren Singh also announced that the government will send security guards to the border regions in order to protect the populace and stop the flow of illegal immigration.

Security forces are on high alert due to heightened military activities by the Myanmar junta close to the Manipur border, which has warned authorities of an increase in the number of refugees entering the nation from its neighbour.

Manipur education minister Thousaoham Basantakumar who is also a member of the cabinet sub-committee informed that on March 26 he and other top officials would tour border regions to assess the conditions for setting up detention camps.

Speaking to the media, Basantakumar added that the state of Manipur will be able to prevent any negative effects from the migration by providing housing facilities for individuals escaping Myanmar.
