Guwahati: The deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar has been extended to June 30, 2023 in order to provide taxpayers more time. As a result, individuals can inform the required authority of their Aadhaar for Aadhaar-PAN connection without suffering consequences.
A supplementary notification has been sent out to this effect.
According to the provisions of the Income-tax Act of 1961 (the “Act”), every person who had been assigned a PAN as of July 1, 2017 and was qualified to receive an Aadhaar number was required to inform the prescribed authority of his Aadhaar on or before March 31, 2023, in exchange for payment of the prescribed fee. As on April 1, 2023, doing so will result in specific consequences under the Act. The deadline to notify Aadhaar to the required authority in order to link Aadhaar and PAN has been extended to June 30, 2023.
From 1st July, 2023, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to intimate their Aadhaar, as required, shall become inoperative and the consequences during the period that PAN remains inoperative will be as follows:
(i) no refund shall be made against such PANs; (ii) interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which PAN remains inoperative; and (iii) TDS and TCS shall be deducted /collected at higher rate, as provided in the Act.
With notification of Aadhaar to the required authority and payment of a cost of Rs 1,000, the PAN can be rendered operational once more in 30 days.
Those who have been exempted from PAN-Aadhaar connection are not subject to the aforementioned penalties. This group comprises people who live in certain States, people who aren’t considered residents under the Act, people who aren’t Indian citizens, and those who were at least 80 years old at some point in the preceding year.
It should be noted that more than 51 crore PANs have already been connected to Aadhaar as of this writing.
