39 killed in fire at Mexican migrant facility near U.S. border

Guwahati: A massive fire that started on Tuesday at a migration centre close to the border between Mexico and the United States resulted as many as 39 casualties.

According to reports, the fire incident occurred inside the National Migration Institute (INM) office in Ciudad Juarez after the authorities detained a group of migrants who had been detained after being picked up from the streets.

At least 29 other people were injured in the fire.

The INM has not yet disclosed the origin of the fire or the nationalities of the victims.

The Institute of Migration in Guatemala eventually determined that 29 of the 39 fatalities were Guatemalan citizens.

Following the tragedy, Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said, “What we know so far is that migrants from Central America and some from Venezuela were in that shelter. We still do not know exactly the names and nationalities of those who unfortunately lost their lives.”

“This had to do with a protest that they started after, we assume, they found out that they were going to be deported, and as a protest, they put mattresses from the shelter at the door of the shelter, and they set fire to them and they did not imagine that this was going to cause this terrible accident,” he said.
