Mizoram: Illegal foreign cigarettes worth Rs 3 Crore seized in Champhai

Guwahati: In yet another major haul, 235 cases of foreign cigarettes worth Rs 3.525 crore has been recovered by the troopers of Assam at Melbuk Refugee Camp of Zokhawthar in Champhai district of Mizoram.

Acting on a tip-off, Assam Rifles along with Customs Preventive Force carried out an operation and seized the foreign cigarettes.

Information indicates that the team recovered the items after finding them dumped near the Melbuk Refugee Camp in Zokhawthar on the border between India and Myanmar.

The seized consignment was later given to the Customs Preventive Force for further legal action.

The ongoing smuggling of illegal goods is a major cause of concern for Mizoram. Such actions against smuggling activities in Mizoram have been successfully carried out by the Assam Rifles, known as the “Sentinels of Northeast.”
