Guwahati: This time, cab drivers have fell victim to these con artists amid a number of fraud cases that have been reported in Guwahati.
Several women are reportedly part of a gang that has begun to rob ola and uber drivers by making online reservations.
Through online channels, the thieves schedule the taxi and steal thousands of dollars from their bank accounts.
Numerous complaints have been filed against these taxi drivers at the Guwahati police stations in Dispur, Paltan Bazar, and Chandmari.
The scammers phone and reserve the cabs first. Then they present themselves as innocent and claim they need assistance immediately because a family member has been taken to the hospital.
The thieves contact them after the driver arrives and request financial assistance.
The con artists inform the drivers that they will receive money via another bank account, which they must send to a QR code they have sent because their bank account is inactive.
The victims submit the money to a QR code after receiving a message that credits them, but the message that credits them was later discovered to be a fake.
The con artists rescind the reservation and switch off their phones when they realise they’ve been duped.
