Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court, one of India’s oldest High Courts, will mark its Platinum Jubilee on April 5, 2023. The ceremony will be attended by the Prime Minister, Chief Justice and President of India along with a host of other dignitaries.
A felicitation ceremony will be performed as part of the celebration for the Senior Advocates, Retired Judicial Officers, Registry, and Pleaders Clerks. The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, will also announce the publication of “Gauhati High Court: History & Heritage” in Assamese. The Union Minister of Law & Justice, Kiren Rijiju, will unveil a commemorative stamp of the Gauhati High Court on April 5 to honour the occasion. There will also be a special Platinum Jubilee edition of the ATMAN magazine.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Ministry of AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal will release six books on customary laws on the Rabha, Tiwa, ZemeNaga, and Bodos of Assam, Nyshis of Arunachal Pradesh, and Halams of Tripura on April 6. The felicitation of former judges of the Gauhati High Court will come next.
The Gauhati High Court was founded in 1948 and until the introduction of separate High Courts for the States of Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura on March 23, 2013, functioned as the common court for the seven northeastern states of Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. The Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh States are presently subject to the jurisdiction of the Gauhati High Court, which has its principal seat in Guwahati and three (three) permanent benches in Kohima (Nagaland), Aizawl (Mizoram), and Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh).
The Indian Prime Minister will attend the culmination of the Gauhati High Court’s Platinum Jubilee celebration on April 14.
