Assam: Pro-Khalistani group SFJ asks ULFA-I to launch independence move

Guwahati: The banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) on April 4 had been asked to launch an independence movement by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), who had previously threatened Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the alleged abuse of pro-khalistani inmates in Dibrugarh jail.

President of the SFJ, Gurpatwant Singh Pannu endorsed Assam’s separation from India in a letter to ULFA-I.

Pannu suggested that the ULFA-I launch an independence referendum on whether India-occupied Assam should be an independent nation, drawing a lesson from the global Khalistani referendum that was launched by the SFJ for the Balkanization of India.

”Considering that Assamese people have the right to self-determination under international law, valuing their commitment and sacrifices for the cause of free ore and accounting for ULFA-l’s: dedication, strength, discipline, popularity, and organizational setup, ST would like to suggest that, on the lines of Khalistan Referendum, General Paresh, you also announce to hold Referendum on the question Should Indian Occupied Assam Be An Independent Country?”, SFJ said in its letter.

The SFJ president announced that his group would support the Assam Independence referendum and offer all legal assistance and logistical support to the ULFA-I in addition to supporting worldwide advocacy efforts and giving legal support for presenting the case before the UN.

It needs to be noted that the SFJ’s answer came after the ULFA-I responded to the latter’s threat to the Assam CM.

The militant group had stated in the letter to the SFJ that the allegations of torture made by pro-khalistani inmates in the Dibrugarh jail were regrettable and misconstrued.
