CSP Provider Stole Lakhs from Tea Workers’ Bank Accounts In Assam

Guwahati: A bank assistant and Customer Service Point (CSP) operator have been charged with stealing several lakh rupees from the bank accounts of struggling tea garden labourers in the Tinsukia district of Assam.

The incident was reported at the Dehing Tea Estate Branch of the Punjab National Bank in the Golai locality.

The accused CSP provider has been identified as Julie Baruah.

According to the victims, Julie Baruah allegedly collected the tea garden workers’ signatures on bank paperwork and promised them that she would hand over the money after having it withheld from each account; however, the CSP provider allegedly did not follow through on her promise.

The case came to fore after tea garden employees visited the aforementioned branch on Wednesday morning to inquire about their funds and learned that the CSP provider had embezzled the funds.

She is said to have stolen money from nearly 3,000 bank accounts.

Speaking to the media, one of the victims said, “Julie Baruah has embezzled several lakhs of rupees from our bank accounts. We tried to contact her over the phone, but, she didn’t respond to our calls. We have lodged police complaints against her.”

Another victim reported that Julie Baruah is currently on the run.

Meanwhile, a case has already been filed at the Digboi police station in relation to the incident.
