Guwahati: A Sub Inspector working at the Nagaon Police Station was arrested by the sleuths of the Vigilance & Anti-Corruption department on Wednesday night for bribery.
The SI has been identified as Suruzul Haque.
He was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the complainant at his office located in Nagaon of Assam.
He had allegedly demanded a bribe from a complainant for giving him relief in an old pending case.
Haque has only one month to retire from his job.
The vigilance cell took to their official Twitter handle and wrote, “In a late evening Ops, a team of @DIR_VAC_ASSAM trapped red handed and apprehended Sub Inspector(UB) Suruzul Haque of Nagaon PS after he accepted a part of demanded bribe from the complainant for giving him relief in old pending case.”
In the wake of the arrests, police have stepped up measures to nab government employees demanding bribes.
In this regard, the Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh has warned all employees that they would be dealt with strictly if caught.
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption cell of Assam has also released six toll-free numbers for people to report such cases.
