Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Gauhati High Court at its Platinum Jubilee Celebration held at Latasil Field in Guwahati for setting a standard of exceptional standards and lofty goals. He lauded the High Court’s dedication to standing by the people and its function as a defender of the Constitution.
The Gauhati High Court had imposed press censorship on periodicals and newspapers during those gloomy years of emergency, the Chief Minister recalled. The High Court stayed strong in upholding people’s civil rights in the face of difficult conditions.
The Gauhati High Court, which serves as the common High Court for the seven states in the Northeast, has been essential to local research and traditional dispute resolution. De-clogging jails and involving more attorneys in the campaign have been emphasised. The High Court also addressed the backlog of cases by removing 27,000 cases with sentences of up to three years, excluding those involving serious crimes.
The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, launched electronic case filing in 2020, and the government has agreed to increase the number of positions in lower courts. The Gauhati High Court has consistently maintained the rights of the populace, and it will continue to serve as an example for others to emulate.
