Students’ group seeks an investigation into accused in NIT Silchar assault case

Guwahati: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar officials and police have been given a deadline of four days by the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHA) to conduct a thorough investigation and take stern punishment against individuals responsible for the physical assault case.

According to reports, some older students physically assaulted a junior student on March 31 at NIT Silchar.

Reportedly, Siddhant Paitya, an engineering student in his fourth semester, was taken in serious condition to Silchar Medical College and Hospitals (SMCH). He filed a first information report (FIR) at the Ghungoor Police Outpost against 18 seniors with the assistance of his family.

According to Paitya, some seniors bullied him because of his mother tongue and where he is from. He stayed on the NIT campus on Tuesday night and left his car in front of Hostel-6. He claimed the seniors intentionally destroyed the automobile to intimidate him.

His mother said there are severe cuts and injuries on his body. “It was a horrifying incident. The authorities should look into this carefully before something bigger happens,” the student’s mother said.

Chief Adviser of the students body Rupam Nandi Purkaystha, while speaking to media persons said, “Following the attack on the student who is a local resident of Barak Valley by some senior students of the institute, an FIR was filed by the victim’s family. We demand immediate action within the next four days to be taken by Cachar Police against the accused mentioned in the FIR. If Cachar Police and the NIT authorities do not initiate any measures within April 11 (Tuesday), we shall be bound to launch democratic protest condemning the incident.”

On the other hand, the NIT Silchar administration claimed that they took firm action by dissolving the current student body and cancelling the election of the Gymkhana student body.
