India’s tiger population increased by 400 In last four years

Guwahati: The latest tiger census data, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi released on Sunday showed a 200 percent increase of tigers in India over the previous four years.

According to official statistics, the number of tigers increased from 1,411 in 2016, 1,706 in 2010, 2,226 in 2014, and 2,967 in 2018, reaching 3,267 in 2022.

The “World Big Cat Alliance” was established by Prime Minister Modi as he was present at the opening ceremony for the remembrance of 50 years of “Project Tiger” (IBCA).

Moreover, he published a book titled “Amrit Kaal ka Tiger Vision” in which he outlined his 25-year plan for tiger conservation.

Gracing the inaugural session in Mysuru, PM Modi said, “India has not only saved tigers but created an ecosystem for them to flourish. The success of ‘Project Tiger’ is a matter of pride not only for India but for the whole world.”

“We do not believe in conflict between ecology and economy, but give importance to their co-existence. India is a country where protecting nature is part of our culture,” he said.

PM Modi said that the IBCA will prioritise the preservation and protection of the world’s top seven big cats.

He further said, “Cheetahs had become extinct in India decades ago. We brought this magnificent big cat to India from Namibia and South Africa. This is the first successful transcontinental translocation of the big cat.”

PM Modi participated on a 20-kilometer safari at the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka in order to commemorate the project’s 50-year milestone.

PM Modi also paid a visit to the elephant keepers Bellie and Bomman, who were featured in an Oscar-winning documentary at Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu.

The prime minister said, “The documentary The Elephant Whisperers which won an Oscar also reflects our legacy of the wonderful relationship between nature and creatures. I urge you (foreign dignitaries) to take something from the life and tradition of our tribal society.”
