Assam: PM Narendra Modi inaugurates 3 medical colleges; State to have 24 medical colleges in coming years

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three newly built medical colleges of Assam from the venue where he also dedicates All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati to the people on April 14.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently granted permission to the three medical schools in Nalbari, Nagaon, and Kokrajhar to begin offering MBBS programmes in the academic year 2023–2024.

Speaking on the occasion, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Today Assam is witnessing the inauguration of the 11th, 12th and 13th medical college…our aim is to establish 24 medical colleges in the state and we are determined to achieve the same in the 3-4 years.”

The inauguration was virtually held at the AIIMS Guwahati site at the city’s outskirts, Changsari.

The overall number of MBBS seats in the state under the government sector has climbed to 1,500 across 12 medical colleges since the NMC approved the Nalbari Medical College earlier this month.

PM Modi also unveiled the Ayushman Assam project, which offers 5 lakhs in health insurance to all households with ration cards along with opening the medical schools. On April 14, PM Modi will launch the project by printing 1 crore 10 lakh cards.
