Guwahati: As many as eight persons were detained by the police in Assam’s Lanka as part of a significant campaign against gambling, officials informed on Monday.
Initial reports state that the anti-gambling operation took place last night at Kaki in Lanka in the Hojai district of Assam.
At least eight people were apprehended by the police for participating in gambling during the operation, which was run under the direction of Kaki Police Station’s officer in charge, Shyamaljyoti Phukan.
According to additional reports, the offenders were apprehended while gambling in the Lankan village of Khring Khring.
Those detained on charges of gambling were identified Amrit Sinha, Bikram Majumdar, Shyamal Majumdar, Rupam Majumdar, Tapan Majumdar, Ajit Majumdar, Utpal Das and Ramkrishna Majumdar.
Officials further informed that the eight gamblers were arrested and then charged with violating applicable laws who also disclosed that they had been jailed.
The Assam Game and Betting Act’s Sections 13 and 14 were applied to them for gambling, according to the Kaki Police, who claim that a case with the case number 48/2023 was filed against them.
The Kaki Police detained as many as four people for gambling from Tilabazar in Lanka just two days ago, and they were all jailed for it.
