Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with West Ham transfers title burden to City

Guwahati: Arsenal sacrificed points on Sunday after holding a lead for the second straight game in order to put Manchester City under pressure in the Premier League title chase.

Arsenal raced to a 2-0 lead with two goals from Gabriel Jesus (7′) and Martin degaard (10′) and appeared to be recovering from their 2-2 draw against a revitalised Liverpool squad in their previous match in their Sunday match against relegation-threatened West Ham United.

The Gunners made a strong start, but as the game went on, they appeared overconfident as they unnecessarily let up a penalty. Thomas Partey lost control of the ball to Declan Rice, and after the West Ham midfielder recognised Lucas Paqueta’s run, Gabriel Magalhaes’ errant sliding tackle—in spite of Arsenal’s protestations for a handball—was adjudged to be a penalty.

Said Benrahma was on hand to score from the penalty spot to make it 2-1. That seemed to be the turning point, but Arsenal later flubbed their lines when given a similar opportunity from the spot to increase their lead.

Bukayo Saka was given the chance to score from the spot to make it 3-1 for Arsenal after Michail Antonio committed a handball at the 50-minute mark. Saka’s missed penalty shot kept the score at 2-1, though.

However, that did not last long as the London Stadium became more tense and West Ham United went on to score at the other end to make the score 2-2. When Thilo Kehrer lofted the ball into the Arsenal area, Bowen remained just onside as his volley slipped past Ramsdale after rebounding off the ground.

Arsenal lost points for the second straight game as the score was 2-2. Arsenal will play Southampton on Saturday, and with a win, would be able to increase their lead to seven points before Manchester City’s next Premier League game.

However, Manchester City will have two games in hand and may close the difference to just one point with victory. Manchester City is unable to play this week owing to commitments with the UEFA Champions League. The two table tops will face off on April 28 in a game that is being billed as the title decider, and City, a squad that has experience in title run-ins, will have the advantage.
