Guwahati: Amidst reports of unabated Burmese supari syndicate from Myanmar into the Northeast, Cachar police seized Burmese betel nuts of around 1800 sacks and arrested 9 persons and the search for others is on.
The Burmese supari was seized from 7 trucks in Digarkhal of Assam.
The arrestees are the driver and handymen of the trucks.
They are currently being interrogated in order to learn more details about the smuggling operation.
The trucks were intercepted while on their way to Mizoram.
However, the seized Burmese betel nuts costs around Rs 4 crore.
As per police officials, the illegal substance was allegedly intended for distribution throughout the state, according to police suspicions.
Since supari is a prohibited substance in the state due to its negative health effects, the police have stepped up their enforcement of the law.
As vigilant the Assam police are becoming more smart steps the illegal traders are trying though the attempts getting failed.
Burmese supari is smuggled from Myanmar and then unlawfully transported to different parts of India and abroad.
It needs to be noted that the Burmese supari syndicate continues to operate in Assam, despite warnings from the Chief Minister.
