NHRC Takes Notice of Doboka Shelter Home Case & Notifies Assam Govt

Guwahati: The unfortunate incident at the Doboka shelter home in Assam’s Hojai district has been reported to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Following a hearing for the matter with the registration number 128/03/14/2003, the NHRC has sent a notice to the Assam government regarding this.

The commission initially initiated a complaint in relation to it after the terrible incident was reported on numerous media channels.

The state administration must provide an in-depth affidavit about the occurrence, according to a directive from the Gauhati High Court. Regarding the situation, the Guwahati High Court has also submitted its own case. Sandeep Mehta, the court’s top justice, heard the case and questioned the state administration about why no provisions had been made for the children’s safety.

On April 19, more than 50 children staying at a Doboka shelter house had serious illnesses.  Initial reports state that the youngsters were ill abruptly, experiencing symptoms like nausea, headache, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

The age range of the sick children, according to the information received, is between 1.5 and 6 years. The moment the symptoms started to appear; emergency services were contacted.

Up to four ambulances arrived at the scene quickly and took the kids to a nearby hospital. Under the direction of the Hojai district unit of the All-Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU), they were transported to a hospital.

The precise reason why so many youngsters became ill so abruptly is still unknown. However, it is speculated that their illness may have been caused by the extreme heat in addition to the fact that the shelter dwellings were constructed of tarpaulin, which traps heat.

On the other hand, severe storms that swept through the area in recent days also demolished dwellings built of tarpaulin, worsening the situation for those who live there.
