DNLA to Sign MoU with Assam Government Today in New Delhi

Guwahati: The government of Assam and the militant group Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday evening in New Delhi.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, and other senior MHA and Assam Government officials would be present when the MoU is signed at the MHA office at around 6:30 p.m.

The unilateral ceasefire’s prolongation had been declared by the DNLA earlier this month.

The organization’s chairman, Juhthai, informed the assam Chief minister in writing of the DNLA’s decision to prolong the ceasefire for another six months. In response to the Assam Chief Minister’s call for peace, the DNLA unilaterally declared a six-month truce on September 20, 2021. Exactly two weeks had passed since the DNLA was accused of opening fire on a convoy of seven trucks on August 26 in the Dima Hasao district, killing five persons and wounding one.

The DNLA was founded in April 2019 to conduct an armed campaign to secure the sovereignty of the Dimasa people. Some regions of the bordering Nagaland state, including the Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts, are said to be active DNLA hotspots.

A MoU was signed on April 20 between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to end their more than fifty-year-old border dispute. Discussions were held regarding 12 border locations in Arunachal Pradesh and 8 border areas in Assam. Both parties have agreed to keep things as they are until a final agreement is achieved in certain areas. The agreement also has clauses that will improve communication between the two governments and call for a joint survey to settle any potential future conflicts.
