Leader Of Bir Lachit Sena Arrested for Extortion & Abuse of Businessman
Guwahati: Bir Lachit Sena Leader Shrinkhal Chaliha has been arrested on Tuesday after a video of him attempting to extort money from a merchant in Sivasagar district of Assam and insulting him after he refused to pay the needed money surfaced online.
Two days after the police and paramilitary forces purportedly placed Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha under house arrest, a new video of him allegedly verbally abusing and spitting on a merchant in Sivasagar of Assam has appeared on social media.
A group of men entered a commercial facility in Sivasagar on April 28 and got into a verbal altercation, during which the leader is said to have spit on the businessman’s face before leaving the scene, according to CCTV evidence.
According to reports, he got into a verbal altercation because the businessman refused to pay the amount asked for the social gathering.
Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh informed that Shrinkhal Chaliha had been arrested and that legal action had been taken against him after the video went viral on social media sites.
On his official Twitter handle, he wrote, “Reference extortion demand at Sivasagar in the name of donation for socio-cultural event – named accused person, one Shrinkhal Chaliha has been arrested and action is being taken per law. @mygovassam directions regarding Forceful collection for socio-cultural events would be strictly implemented by @assampolice.”
Bir Lachit Sena Leader Shrinkhal Chaliha was reportedly placed under house arrest by the Sivasagar police and the paramilitary force on April 29.
This followed the Bir Lachit Sena leader allegedly threatening Nirmal Kumar Mur, a contractor, for hitting a recent member of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Mahmora section.
The video of the incident was surfacing on the social media platforms. After a heated argument, contractor Nirmal Kumar Mur was seen in the trending video punching AJYCP regional secretary Lakhi Das Panikar from the Mahmora unit.
According to reports, Shrinkhal previously called the contractor and warned him that there would be serious repercussions if he hit the AJYCP leader.
Speaking to the media, Shrinkhal said, “I am ready to go to jail but we will not tolerate any form of physical attack by anyone from the non-Assamese community.”
