Assam Cong MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal Welcomes State Govt’s Bid To End Polygamy

Guwahati: Congress MLA from Assam, Abdur Rashid Mandal has praised the state’s move to outlaw polygamy.

The state government’s decision to outlaw polygamy has received support from the MLA representing Goalpara West, who described it as a “good decision”.

“Polygamy should be banned. The Assam government has taken a good decision and I welcome this,” Abdur Rashid Mandal said.

However, he said that it shouldn’t be directed towards a certain group of people.

“It is a good decision and we also want to end polygamy,” he said.

The Assam government established a four-member expert committee on Thursday to assess whether the state legislature has the authority to pass a law outlawing polygamy.

The committee is led by Justice (Retired) Rumi Phookan, and other members include Debajit Saikia, Additional Advocate General for Assam, Nalin Kohli, and Nekibur Zaman, an attorney.

According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, his administration will not introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), but instead wants to outlaw polygamy through a state law.

He added that the committee will undertake extensive consultations with all parties involved, including legal professionals, and would carefully examine the requirements of the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Act, 1937.
