CM Basavaraj Bommai Resigns After BJP’s Debacle in KA Assembly Polls

Guwahati: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai submitted his resignation to governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot following the BJP’s loss in the Karnataka Assembly elections on Saturday.

Speaking to the media, Bommai said, “I have tendered my resignation and it has been accepted.”

Accepting the defeat, Bommai said the saffron party will emerge victorious in the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls.

“I take responsibility for this debacle. There are multiple reasons for this. We will find out all the reasons and strengthen the party once again for Parliament elections,” he added before the media.

Despite winning the Shiggaon constituency by a majority of 35,978 votes, many of Bommai’s ministerial colleagues were defeated.

It should be mentioned that the Congress swept the 224-member Karnataka assembly elections and took back control in the state with a majority of 136 seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is currently in power in the state, was reduced to only 65 seats, according to figures from the Election Commission of India (ECI), while Janata Dal (Secular) only won 19 seats. On the other side, independent candidates gained two seats, while the Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha and Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha each took home one.

Now, everyone is waiting to see who the Congress chooses to be the state’s new chief minister. With the exception of Himachal Pradesh, the Congress had lost all state elections since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Karnataka was the only state in South India where the BJP held power.

Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, characterised the result as a triumph of popular power over crony capitalism. At the party’s headquarters in New Delhi, Gandhi thanked the residents of Karnataka and predicted that hate will eventually give way to love in all other states.

On the other hand, speaking to media persons after the results were declared, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “As I said, Congress’s return to power in Karnataka is a huge responsibility. We went to the people with a few guarantees and we have to fulfill them. We have to work for the people. Public will tell us what will happen next.”

Meanwhile, Congress stalwart Siddaramaiah said the outcome of the Karnataka Assembly elections will be a stepping stone for the party’s victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He also hoped that former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi would become the Prime Minister.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude Congress and sent the party his best wishes for achieving the goals of the people.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said, “Congratulations to the Congress Party for their victory in the Karnataka Assembly polls. My best wishes to them in fulfilling people’s aspirations.”
