Guwahati: A resolution empowering Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to choose the new Karnataka Chief Minister has been approved by the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) with unanimous support.
The resolution that was passed on Saturday stated, “The Congress Legislature Party unanimously resolves that AICC President is hereby authorised to appoint the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party.”
The CLP expressed gratitude to the 6.5 crore Kannadigas in another resolution for their trust in the Congress.
Before the CLP meeting, a large number of people of supporters gathered in front of DK Shivakumar, president of the Karnataka Congress, in Bengaluru and chanted, “We want DK Shivakumar as CM.”
In contrast, Mallikarjun Kharge appointed three observers earlier yesterday in preparation for the election of the CLP leader in Karnataka. Sushilkumar Shinde, a former chief minister of Maharashtra, party officials Jitendra Singh, and Deepak Babaria have been named as observers for the CLP meeting.
The incumbent Basavaraj Bommai-led Bharatiya Janata Party administration was defeated by the Indian National Congress with an absolute majority in the Karnataka Assembly Elections of 2023. The BJP got 66 seats, while the Congress took 135 of them. Only 19 seats were won by the Janata Dal (Secular), however.
