Guwahati: The District Transport Officer (DTO) of Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district has been arrested by Assam Police for allegedly being involved in a case involving phoney vehicle registration.
The arrested DTO has been identified as Gene Kelly G Momin. Significant irregularities were reportedly discovered in the registration of automobiles that were either stolen or tax defaulters.
According to reports, the alleged scam was discovered after Gulam Ali, a citizen of Assam’s Goalpara district, was taken into custody. Ali had obtained the fraudulent automobile registration documents from Momin.
It came to light via questioning and further inquiry that Gulam Ali was in possession of at least three vehicles with forged registration documents.
Assam Police opened an investigation after filing a case at the Agia Police Station in Goalpara, and their findings prompted them to detain the East Garo Hills DTO on Sunday in accordance with Sections 120B/379/411/471/468/420.
According to reports, as many as 30 vehicles that were given bogus documentation have so far been found.
