Srinivas BV arrives in Guwahati; police question him regarding harassment case

Guwahati: Indian Youth Congress (IYC) national president Srinivas Bhadravathi Venkata arrived in Guwahati on Monday in preparation for his appearance before the police in relation to the harassment complaint that former Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta filed against him.

The Youth Congress leader was escorted to Pan Bazar Women’s Police Station after his arrival and interrogated there about the incident.

He then travelled to the CID branch office of the Assam Police in Ulubari. He is expected to arrive in Guwahati about 9.30 am, according to reports that surfaced earlier in the day, and then appear before the police at the DCP (East) office. It was also anticipated that a sizable contingent of members of Congress would meet him at the airport.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati Police implemented Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which forbids gatherings of more than five individuals within the city limits, in advance of Srinivas BV’s anticipated visit.

The Guwahati Police Commissioner’s office issued the directive in an effort to handle the problems caused by crowding and probable unrest.

Any sit-in protests or rally gatherings are now against the law, and the police are taking action to prevent them. The instruction, which is applicable to the city’s three police districts, denotes a complete strategy for preserving peace and safety in the public.

It should be noted that in April, Srinivas BV, the president of the Indian Youth Congress, was accused of harassing Angkita Dutta, the now-expelled president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (AIYC), over the previous six months.

Dutta complained to the police that Srinivas had mentally tormented her and had spoken sexist remarks about her. She further said that he used slang and threatened to suffer serious consequences if she continued to criticise him in front of senior office holders.

Dutta also spoke of a meeting she had with him on March 25 at a hotel in Chhattisgarh, where he heckled her while gripping her arm, pulled and pushed her, and threatened to ruin her life in the Congress party using slang language.

She added that although she had told the party’s top officials, no action had been taken to punish Srinivas.
