Kamrup (M) Admin Orders Magisterial Investigation into ‘Eviction Drive’ at Silsako Beel
Guwahati: The Kamrup Metro District administration has been ordered by the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to launch a magisterial investigation into the event involving the eviction campaign at Silsako Beel in Guwahati.
The Kamrup metro administration has given Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Priyanshu Bharadwaj authority to conduct an investigation into the aforementioned allegation and submit the results to the AHRC within the next seven days based on AHRC complaint no. 4627 of 2022/23 (9)/3.
Furthermore, Bhaskar Jyoti Kalita has been instructed by Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate of Kamrup Metro district to support ADM Priyanshu Bharadwaj during the course of the investigation.

It should be noted that the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) started an eviction drive at Silsako beel, a protected wetland in Assam’s Guwahati, earlier in the month of February this year.
As many as 15 excavators and 3000 armed troops secured the location at the start of the operation.
The operation resulted in the eviction of some 250 unlawfully built homes on Silsako Beel, close to the Chanchal neighbourhood on VIP road.
There are about 1800 bighas of land in Silsako Beel, of which 1200 bighas are encroached upon, according to government reports.
Earlier, speaking to the media, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Chairman, Narayan Deka said, “A total of 1200 bighas of land in Silsako is under the control of encroachers. At this point of time, it is not possible to evict everyone in a single go. Those within 100 meters between the water channels on the periphery of Silsako Beel upto Narengi will be evicted.”
