Camp Nou To Be closed by Barcelona for 2023–24 season

Guwahati: With their upcoming encounter against Mallorca on Sunday, the final game to be played at their home field for the previous 60 years, Football Club Barcelona is getting ready to bid a final farewell to the legendary Camp Nou stadium.

Since 1957, the 99,000-seat Camp Nou has served as the Blaugrana’s home field. Instead, they will relocate to the Estadi Lluis Companys, a 55,000-seat stadium on Montjuic, a sizable hill southwest of Barcelona.

However, because Camp Nou will be undergoing renovations, the change in their home stadium will only be temporary for the 2023–2034 campaign. This comes after President Joan Laporta originally unveiled ideas for remodelling their historic fortress back in April 2022 and they were approved earlier this year. The US investment titans Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan have agreed to provide the Catalan club with up to €1.5 billion (£1.3 billion/$1.6 billion) in finance for their Espai Barca project.

Furthermore, Barcelona has informed UEFA and the City Council of their decision to evacuate the Camp Nou in order to renovate it in time for the 2019 season. The Catalan club will play its home matches at a venue other than Nou Camp for the first time since 1957. Barca had previously spent 35 years at the previous Camp de los Corts.

The redevelopment plans also signal a huge time of transition for the team and the stadium, which was renamed the “Spotify Camp Nou” prior to the start of this season as part of an agreement with the dominant music streaming service.

For the time being, their final campaign in the Camp Nou has been a triumph, with Barca winning La Liga after taking an insurmountable lead in the standings. With 85 points from 36 games, they have a comfortable lead over second-place Atletico Madrid by 13 points and archrival Real Madrid by 14 points.
