3-Member Committee Set Up to Initiate Kharguli Incident Probe

Guwahati: A three-member committee has been established by the Assam government to commence an investigation into the water pipe rupture incident in the Kharguli area of Guwahati.

A full investigation of the incident must be done by the three-person committee, and the report must be submitted within three days.

A notification issued by the Department of Housing & Urban Affairs on orders by the Governor of Assam read, “In the interest of public service, the Governor of Assam is pleased to constitute a three member committee to enquire into incident of bursting of clear water pumping main at Joypur near IOCL Gate which is being implemented under the JICA assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project.”

The three members of the committee are:

1.    Shri Pabitra Ram Khaund, IAS, Secretary to the Govt. of

Assam, DoHUA  (Chairman)

2.    Shri Ramendra Sundar Choudhury, Retd. Secretary to the

Govt. of Assam, PHE Department cum Addl. Mission Director

(DEM), AMRUT (Member)

3.    Shri Sanjai Kr. Mahanta, Retd. Chief Engineer, Irrigation

Department cum Addl. Mission Director (Admin), AMRUT (Member)

The incident involving the broken water supply pipeline that caused chaos and resulted in a woman’s death in Guwahati’s Kharguli was taken under suo moto notice by the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) on Friday. A member of the AHRC named Santanu Bharali brought the issue to their attention. He stated that the deputy commissioner for the Kamrup (metro) district will be required to submit a report following an investigation into the occurrence.

Following the incident with the ruptured water supply pipeline, the situation in Kharguli is still dangerous. The Joypur Primary School offered shelter to the people who were left stranded in Kharguli’s Joypur when the water pipeline burst yesterday.
