Migrant Workers For Qatar World Cup Being Arrested For Demanding Unpaid Wages

Guwahati: Four months after their detention, some security officers detained at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar are still being held there, according to The Guardian. They apparently attempted to settle a disagreement over unpaid salaries before being apprehended.

A security guard from India is detained in Qatar along with two Pakistanis who have each been given a six-month prison term and a fine of 10,000 riyals (about Rs 2,20,000).

The issue was first brought to light by the human rights organisation Equidem, and was subsequently confirmed by The Guardian.

A local private security firm called Stark Security Services reportedly used both Indian and Pakistani nationals for the football competition. However, despite having months left on their job term, they were fired mere days after the contest.

However, the human rights organization is calling for their immediate release and asserting that “this is the true cost of FIFA’s reckless disregard for the rights of people who help them generate enormous profits.”

Apart from three, the article cited nine additional people who were fired before their contract expired. Five of them were fired but are still in the country, while four others were deported.

It should be noted that on January 23, 200 guards boarded a bus and travelled to the security firm’s headquarters to negotiate over unpaid wages. But according to reports, the firm staff phoned the police because they thought the workers were blocking the route.

The workers said that nobody else stepped out of the bus to engage in contract negotiations with the corporation except from their leaders.
