Root Cause of Odisha Train Tragedy Found, Says Rly Minister

Guwahati: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated on Sunday that the accident’s primary cause and those accountable had been found after inspecting the repair works at the disaster site in Balasore, Odisha.
According to Vaishnaw, an alteration to the electronic interlocking was to blame for the accident that lost more than 280 lives.
Ashwini Vaishnaw was quoted by ANI saying, “The Commissioner of railway safety has investigated the matter and let the investigation report come out. We have identified the cause of the incident and the people responsible for it. It happened due to a change in electronic interlocking.”
He added that the repair work, which is expected to be completed by next Wednesday, is presently their main priority.
He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspected the site yesterday. We will try to restore the track today. All bodies have been removed. Our target is to finish the restoration work by Wednesday morning so the trains can start running on this track.”
Notably, several coaches of the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailed and collapsed on a nearby track while travelling to Howrah. The derailed carriages were struck by the 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, which was travelling in the opposite direction on a similar track. A few Coromandel Express coaches lost control and collided with the third track’s halted freight train.

According to records, the train catastrophe, which occurred last Friday around 7 p.m. in the Balasore area, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, was the fourth deadliest in India.
