The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CES & HS), Government of Arunachal Pradesh, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday in Itanagar.
Tana Tage, Director of the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies, welcomed all the dignitaries on this occasion and stated that this MoU will have a long-term impact on the research activities for societal benefits to be carried out by them.
The increase in meteorological observations in the state would provide the people of Arunachal Pradesh with accurate weather forecasts and warnings, according to Union Minister for Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju. Repo Ronya, IAS, Secretary of Science and Technology for the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and K.N. Mohan, Scientist-G and Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati, both signed the MoU.
Arunachal Pradesh’s Minister of Science and Technology, Honchun Ngandam, expressed his happiness that the state would soon have a better network of weather observatories and pledged that Arunachal Pradesh would offer the India Meteorological Department all necessary assistance in carrying out the installation work of meteorological observatories.
As part of the MoU, both organisations will conduct joint research and development in the field of meteorology and its related subjects, knowledge transfers, and information/data sharing in areas of weather, extreme event monitoring and forecasting, to further the missions of their respective organisations, according to Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Scientist-F, Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati.
IMD will install around 100 AWS/ARGs (Automatic Weather Stations/Automatic Raingauge Stations) in the state of Arunachal Pradesh with the aid of CES & HS.
IMD also intends to set up three X-band Doppler weather radars across the state. The state’s surface weather observations will benefit from this improvement.
Additionally, weather forecasts with impact-based advisories will be published for various state users. Through trainings, information transfers, data sharing, and other scientific research initiatives, this will create a mutually advantageous partnership between the two sides.
