Assam: 150 Kg Meat, Suspected To Be Beef, Seized in Duliajan

Guwahati: Around 150 kg of suspected beef were seized from a car on Monday in the Bhadoi Pachali area close to Duliajan, according to the police.
In connection with the incident, the police also arrested Ziauddin Ahmed and Habibur Rahman, both residents of Duliajan’s Masjid Patty area.

Police made the seizure on Sunday night after receiving a tip from one of their reliable sources.

Initial reports state that the two people were apprehended by the police while they were moving a sizable amount of suspected beef meat from Margherita to Duliajan in a four-wheeler with the licence plate AS 06M 0116.
At the Duliajan police station, a file was opened against both parties in connection with the event, and the two suspects are currently being questioned.

It should be noted that the Assam assembly enacted a contentious law governing the sale of beef and beef-derived products in the state as well as the transportation and slaughter of all animals in the year 2021. Although the bill does not outright forbid the beef industry, some intellectual groups purportedly asserted that it makes it impossible to operate in the state.

Under specific procedural restrictions, Assam permits both the sale and eating of beef as well as the killing of cattle.
After a two-hour debate in the House during which opponents of the bill demanded that it be sent to a select committee, the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill, 2021, was approved by voice vote.
The law prohibits the interstate movement of cows via Assam, ostensibly to prevent their smuggling to Bangladesh, which is nearby. Additionally, it prohibits moving livestock from any location within Assam to locations outside the state “where slaughter of cattle is not regulated by law” as well as moving cattle from other states through Assam to locations beyond the state. Cattle cannot be transported for legitimate agricultural or animal husbandry reasons without a valid permit from a competent authority, although movement of cattle within the state of Assam is also prohibited.
Additionally, the bill outlaws the sale of beef within 5 km of any temple, “satra” (Vaishnavite monastery), or “other religious institutions belonging to Hindu religion” in places where the majority of residents are Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, or members of other non-beef-eating communities.

A fine of between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh and a sentence of three to eight years in prison might result from violations of the bill’s provisions.3
