Mob sets fire to residence of Union Minister RK Ranjan in Manipur

Guwahati: The Manipur government has stated that a crowd is suspected of setting fire to RK Ranjan Singh’s Kongba residence in Imphal late on Thursday night. Singh is the Union Minister of State for External Affairs.

Singh while quoted by ANI said, “I am currently in Kerala for official work. Thankfully, nobody got injured last night at my Imphal home. The miscreants came with petrol bombs and damage has been done to the ground floor and first floor of my home.”

A mob gathered close to his house, and the Imphal police had to use tear gas shells to break it up. Furthermore, Singh’s family was not at home at the time.

Appealing for peace in the northeastern state, he said, “It is very sad to see what is happening in my home state. I will still continue to appeal for peace. Those indulging in this kind of violence are absolutely inhuman.”

Furthermore, a crowd had set fire to the manipur minister Nemcha Kipgen’s official mansion in the Lamphel area of Imphal West district before Singh’s home. Fire personnel arrived at the scene and put out the flames before the fire could spread to the area.

The police officials claimed that a crowd also set fire to two abandoned homes after an attack in the Khamenlok region left nine persons dead and ten more injured. Security personnel were forced to deploy physical force against the throng and tear gas shells at New Checkon in Imphal. There were no casualties reported.

The ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki people in Manipur has claimed the lives of over 100 persons too far. The authorities also put in place a curfew and blocked the internet. The first altercation started on May 3 after the hill districts held a “Tribal Solidarity March” to protest the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation.
