Sikha Sarma detained in Guwahati for FB post about late BJP leader Jonali Nath
Guwahati: Assamese writer Sikha Sarma has gotten herself into trouble once more. Sarma was held by Dispur police in Guwahati on Thursday night for her allegedly offensive Facebook remark about late BJP leader Jonali Nath.
Sarma is accused of casting doubt on the now-deceased BJP leader’s character in a Facebook post, which infuriated a number of online users.
Sarma was taken into custody Following the filing of a FIR by the Assam State Commission for Women.
The commission recommended the authorities to act decisively in response to her disparaging comments about Jonali Nath, who was killed by a person known as Hasnur Islam.
It is important to note that, hours after Islam’s arrest, Sikha Sarma quoted the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police’s statement regarding the murder case.
The investigation agency said in a formal statement that the victim and the accused had been having an unlawful relationship for the previous two years. However, the comment was not warmly received by the deceased BJP leader’s family.
The husband of Jonali Nath, identified as Chandra Kumar Nath, filed a FIR against the IGP over his comments at the press conference because he was dissatisfied with the inquiry and the information that followed.
In the presser, IGP Assam CID Debraj Upadhyaya had said, “The accused has confessed that he killed the woman and dumped her body on the National Highway on Sunday night. The victim had an illicit relationship with the accused for the past two years and was supposed to get married to another woman. To discuss on this and their relationship, the victim had expressed her wiliness to meet with him once. Accordingly, he visited her and they met inside a car. There was a heated argument between the two, after which the accused beat her roughly on the neck, then grabbed her with his bare hands and strangled her to death. The same has been confirmed by the forensic doctors.”
According to the CID official, the accused abandoned her body close to a major highway after realising she was bleeding and losing consciousness.
It should be noted that Jonali Nath’s body was found earlier this week on National Highway No. 17 close to Shalpara in Krishnai.
Nath served as the Goalpara district secretary for the BJP. She was a Matia inhabitant.
According to sources, Hasnur killed the woman, dumped her body on the national highway, and then ran away. The body was spotted by locals on Sunday night following which they informed authorities.
She had several damage marks on her body, which suggested that she had been brutally attacked before death. Locals claim that Nath was last seen at a market in the late afternoon of the tragic day.
