Assam: 1 More Held In BJP Leader Jonali Nath’s Murder Case

Guwahati: Another arrest has been made by the Assam Police in relation to the murder of BJP leader Jonali Nath. Ajibur Rahman, the person who was arrested, was taken into custody at the Goalpara district’s Matia.

Rahman was detained after the primary suspect in the case, Hasnur Islam, admitted to his role in the murder during questioning, according to sources.

According to other reports, the two carried out a pre-planned scheme to assassinate the BJP leader.

This Monday, Hasnur, the owner of a clothing store in Goalpara, was taken into custody in Matia Bazar. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police spoke at a news conference after Hasnur’s arrest and disclosed that the two men had been having an extramarital affair for the previous two years. Hasnur and the now-deceased BJP politician Jonali Nath.

However, the statement from the CID didn’t sit well with the deceased BJP leader’s family. The husband of Jonali Nath, identified as Chandra Kumar Nath, filed a FIR against the IGP over his comments at the press conference because he was dissatisfied with the inquiry and the information that followed.

In the presser, IGP Assam CID Debraj Upadhyaya said, “The accused has confessed that he killed the woman and dumped her body on the National Highway on Sunday night. The victim had an illicit relationship with the accused for the past two years and was supposed to get married to another woman. To discuss on this and their relationship, the victim had expressed her wiliness to meet with him once. Accordingly, he visited her and they met inside a car. There was a heated argument between the two, after which the accused beat her roughly on the neck, then grabbed her with his bare hands and strangled her to death. The same has been confirmed by the forensic doctors.”

According to the CID official, the accused abandoned her body close to a major highway after realising she was bleeding and losing consciousness.

At first, it appeared that Hasnur was the only one responsible for the murder, but the CID was still looking into it.

The lifeless body of Jonali Nath was discovered earlier this week close to Shalpara, Krishnai, on National Highway No. 17.

Nath served as the Goalpara district secretary for the BJP. She was a Matia inhabitant.

Sources said that miscreants had killed her and dumped her body on the national highway before fleeing the scene at the time of the event. On Sunday night, people discovered the body, and they immediately alerted authorities.

Several injury marks were found on her body, indicating that she was savagely assaulted before her demise. Reportedly, Nath was last seen by locals at a market in the afternoon hours of the ill-fated day.
