Jairam Ramesh, a prominent member of the Rajya Sabha and Congress leader, has sharply criticized the Prime Minister’s approach to the alleged crisis manufactured by the BJP in Manipur. Ramesh raised questions about the controversial title used by BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP in Manipur, Sanajaoba Leishemba, and the government’s response to the escalating situation in the state.
He highlighted the issue of Sanajaoba Leishemba declaring himself as the “Maharaja of Manipur” on his official letterhead as a Member of Parliament, in violation of constitutional norms. Ramesh pointed out that this title blatantly violates Article 18 of the Indian Constitution, which abolishes all feudal titles, and questioned whether the PM or the Home Minister approved of this practice.
Additionally, Ramesh criticized the PM’s lack of engagement with the crisis in Manipur, contrasting it with Rahul Gandhi’s visits to the state to understand the situation and show solidarity. He questioned whether the PM’s actions stemmed from indifference or cowardice, particularly in the face of escalating violence and lawlessness.
The deteriorating situation in Manipur, which Ramesh likened to a civil war, has resulted in numerous casualties, displacements, and stolen weapons. Despite calls for the dismissal of CM Biren Singh by the Congress Party, the PM’s protection of Singh raises questions about the government’s stance on the violence.
Ramesh further questioned the government’s priorities, particularly its involvement in global affairs like Ukraine while seemingly neglecting the crisis in Manipur. He emphasized concerns about democratic processes in Manipur, highlighting the boycott of elections by Kuki youth and women due to perceived failures in protecting their rights.
As calls for accountability and decisive action grow louder, the situation in Manipur remains tense, underscoring the urgent need for political leadership to address the crisis and restore peace and stability in the state.
