Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has made bold assertions regarding the political landscape in Northeastern states, claiming a strong undercurrent in favor of the Congress party across Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Amidst ongoing campaign activities and alleged obstacles faced by Congress candidates, especially in Assam, Ramesh stated, “All the states of the North East have a strong undercurrent in favor of the Congress… Our candidates are fighting strongly.”
However, Ramesh also highlighted challenges, accusing certain state governments, particularly Assam, of creating hurdles in their campaign efforts. He singled out Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his administration, alleging that they were focused on impeding Congress’s campaign.
“Some state governments, especially Assam, are trying to create hurdles in our campaign… The CM and 7 of their ministers are paying attention to only one seat,” Ramesh claimed.Ramesh suggested that the CM’s presence in Jorhat was due to apprehension regarding Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi’s potential victory. These statements follow Ramesh’s earlier remarks about Sarma’s departure from the Congress party, labeling him an opportunist.
Ramesh emphasized the role the Congress had played in Sarma’s political career, stating, “The Congress gave him ‘identity and position’, and he would have been ‘nowhere’ without the party’s help.”
