Former Minister and Tripura Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman alleged that BJP-backed goons prevented a significant number of voters from casting their votes during the first phase of the Lok Sabha general polls in the West Parliamentary election in Tripura on April 19.
Barman highlighted the failure of the Civil and Police administration in addressing the issue at hand, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
After casting his vote, Barman reiterated that many voters were unable to exercise their electoral right as BJP-backed goons threatened and prevented them from reaching polling stations, and even launched attacks.
Barman further elaborated, stating, “They even set up barricades to stop identified voters. They also pushed opposition polling agents out from polling booths and attacked them. These incidents occurred in different places. They brought unknown individuals from other places to commit these crimes. They even threatened dire consequences to some people.”
Highlighting the gravity of the situation in Agartala, Barman expressed concern over the broader implications across the state, citing numerous distress calls and messages seeking help.
Despite commending the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in Tripura for preventing fake votes, Barman expressed dismay over the failure to address voter suppression effectively.
Barman criticized the authorities for their inaction despite complaints to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), and other officials.
He concluded by emphasizing the urgent need for change, asserting, “The situation will change on June 4,” while lamenting the role of the police as silent spectators in the face of voter suppression.
