In a distinguished civil investiture ceremony held in New Delhi on Monday (April 22), President Droupadi Murmu conferred the esteemed Padma Shri awards upon Sarbeswar Basumatary and Drona Bhuyan, recognizing their exceptional contributions in the fields of Agriculture and Art, respectively.

Sarbeswar Basumatary, a prominent farmer hailing from Assam’s Chirang district, received accolades for his remarkable achievements in agriculture. Originating from humble beginnings, Basumatary’s journey commenced with agricultural work in Bokakhat, Dhansirimukh, at the tender age of 13. Over the years, his dedication and perseverance led him to acquire valuable skills and knowledge through training programs in agriculture, fish farming, and horticulture. Serving as the president of the ‘Panbari Banana Growers’ Society,’ Basumatary spearheaded successful schemes resulting in thriving banana, orange, and pineapple cultivation. His contributions have garnered recognition, including prestigious awards such as the ‘Award of Excellence in Sericulture’ from the Central Silk Board in 2015 and the ‘Best Farmer Award’ from the Assam Agriculture University in 2022.

Drona Bhuyan, an eminent figure in folk culture, particularly known for his mastery in ‘Suknani Ojapali and Deodhani dance,’ was honored for his outstanding artistic endeavors. Born in Satgharia village of Sipajhar, Darrang district, Bhuyan’s passion for performing arts emerged early in life despite facing financial constraints. His talent in acting and his immersion in Ojapali culture under the tutelage of Late Chandra Kanta Nath Oja propelled him to prominence. Bhuyan’s performances have graced various platforms, including Delhi’s Pragati field in 1972, where he showcased Suknani Ojapali and Deodhani Dance. Acknowledged with prestigious awards such as “GURU TILE” from the Ministry of Culture in 2009 and “MEERA AWARD 2012,” Bhuyan’s artistic prowess has earned widespread acclaim, enriching the cultural landscape of Darrang district.
